NZQA is working towards moving external student assessment to an online environment.

New Zealand schools are increasingly using digitally enabled teaching and learning, and NCEA assessments need to reflect this.

NZQA has worked with schools and students since 2014 to co-design external digital assessment and in 2020 NZQA will offer 58 exam sessions across 21 subjects, mostly at three levels.

This 21st century approach to digital assessment will support innovation in teaching and learning and will change as technology evolves. Students will be able to show their skills in different ways such as oral responses, simulation and gamification. These assessment options have the potential to engage more students in ways that are meaningful, authentic and relevant to their individual needs and their culture.
