New Zealand MP David Seymour has argued that granting amnesty to overstayers could negatively impact the ease of tourism in the country. He warned that putting restrictions on people entering the country further might be necessary if visas are approved for overstayers. While fellow MP Chlöe Swarbrick argued that amnesty should be an option for overseas residents who have overstayed their visa through circumstances beyond their control. She noted that the country’s immigration system needs to be addressed and that not all overstayers do so deliberately.
